In a World That Tells You to Keep Going, Take a Break
By Truth & Beauty Project Fellows
You are the master of multitasking and overachieving. My goodness, I don’t know how you do it, but you manage to kick butt at work, cook three wholesome meals a day, maintain a consistent workout schedule, and even sustain a social life without collapsing at the end of every day.
You must be part superhero or something.
But I know that along with the multitasking and overachieving comes a lot of pressure. This pressure can come from within, from that little voice telling you that you need to do more, achieve more, be more. Like nothing you do will ever be enough leaving you with the solitary solution of doing more. Or this pressure can come from outside of you, as society likes to tell us that slowing down is unacceptable. You must always be producing, moving forward, contributing in some way or another.
That’s a lot of pressure for one body to handle.
So I want you to know that it is ok to take a break. Sometimes what you really need the most is not another self-help book to read while you’re cooking dinner and answering emails but rather a few moments of peace and quiet. As the Italians say, sometimes you just need to be tranquillo per uno momento.
And I want you to know that taking a break is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it is the exact opposite! Having not only the ability but the maturity as well to recognize when you need a break is truly a sign of strength. It means you are in tune with yourself, and that you respect your limitations. Sure, you push yourself to amazing lengths, but it is also just as important to pause for a breather along the way.
Think of these breaks as times that you get to take to recharge yourself. Now I’m not just talking refuel your tummy or get a few extra hours of sleep. You can easily become emotionally, mentally, and spiritually drained if you are not careful.
Even masters of multitasking and overachieving can’t run on empty.
By taking a break, you allow yourself to recharge in the areas of life that you are feeling low in. If you’re worried that others may think your break is momentary laziness, don’t. Because really people will respect you more when they see you respecting your own self and your own boundaries.
Life takes a whole lot of effort and energy to survive. But you are not just surviving, you are thriving! Which means you need moments of rest just that much more.
Dear Body, take a break. You deserve it.
